Born on July 12, 1941, in Rahway, New Jersey, Tuttle grew up in a nearby town called Roselle. He was raised in a conservative family with a background that combined Presbyterianism and a creative spirit passed down from his grandfather, who was described as somewhat of a dilettante in the arts.
Tuttle's journey into the art world began at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, where he studied from 1959 to 1963, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree.
